I Remember
Have you ever had something happen in your life so momentous that you remember every little detail about it? You remember what the weather was like, the time, the day, the month, the year and exactly how you were feeling. Some people remember their graduation or when Man first walked on the moon.
I remember. . . Peggy. |

It was April 5, 1991 and The Center for Feline Medicine had been opened for four months. The telephone rang at about twenty after five and Carrie and I both jumped to answer it. You tend to have a lot of time on your hands when you first open a Veterinary Practice. A phone call during this time (other than somebody wanting a donation or selling phone service) was a BIG DEAL. Carrie beat me to it and became involved in a rather long conversation with the caller. All attempts at being cool failed me, as I felt my right ear lobe expand to catch any stray parts of the dialogue. As usual, Carrie gave me the "eye" and directed me to my desk to wait for further information.
"Approximately" thirty minutes and five and one-half seconds later, she put the phone on hold and called me over. "There is a very distraught woman on the phone. She states that yesterday her cat had five kittens out in the garage and they seem to all be connected to each other by their stomachs. She says she can be here in five minutes." With visions of Siamese twins running through my head, I told her to tell the caller to bring the whole family in to the hospital.
Fifty-five minutes and forty-two seconds later, the whole family appeared at the door. I mean the "whole" family! Mama, Papa, two small children and a Grandmother came hurrying through the door. It was raining "cats and dogs" and the whole group came in the front door in a flood of water. Soggy coats were removed and finally a straw basket was uncovered and displayed for our view.
To Be Continued. . .
