    Polyphagic Weight Loss

Why does my cat keep losing weight? He eats all the time and constantly wants to be fed. Progressive loss of weight despite excessive appetite describes a medical condition termed “Polyphagia.” In the cat, the two most common diseases that result in this condition are Hyperthyroidism and Diabetes Mellitus although there are other less common diseases that may cause this condition.

Hyperthyroidism causes an increase in your cat’s metabolic rate and decreases the intestinal transit time. Your kitty may be ravenous at mealtime, exhibit a change in personality, and seem to not “hear” as well or exhibit an inability to relax. Diabetes Mellitus leads to polyphagic weight loss due to the decreased utilization of glucose and loss of glucose in the urine. This results in a decreased detection of circulating calories by the brain. Your kitty will feel the need to eat even though his or her body will not be capable of keeping that nourishment to maintain a constant weight.

In either condition your cat may exhibit other signs such as excessive thirst and urination. Some cats may vomit or have diarrhea. Some cats may seem to act more “distracted” from everyday occurrences than normal. Not all cats will show any or all of the above signs. Some will simply eat a lot and still lose weight. Generally these conditions are noted in middle age or older cats; though cats’ younger than six years have been know to exhibit similar symptoms.

If your cat is exhibiting a polyphagic weight loss, excessive urination and consumption of water, or simply a change in behavior consider taking him or her into your Veterinarian for an exam. Sometimes simple blood work will reveal the problem and your Veterinarian will determine what type of treatment is necessary for the condition diagnosed.
